The GV80 is the first entry in the Genesis SUV line-up which goes on sale for the 2021 model year. It’s built on the same foundation as the midsize G80 sedan but doesn’t (currently) fit the powertrain of the G80 Electric model. The GV80 is a two-row or three-row midsize luxury SUV to Compete with other models like the Mercedes-Benz Pre-class Lexus RX and Volvo XC90.

Whether you like the look of the GV80 or not it’s hard to deny its key attribute: value. To get the same long feature list from an Audi BMW or Mercedes you’d have to pay a few thousand dollars more.

2023 Genesis GV80 Review

Most importantly Genesis offers one of the most generous services guarantees in the industry support long-term guarantees. On the downside the GV80 is hampered by a clunky infotainment interface rather small third-row seats and a potentially more fuel-efficient V6 engine.

The Genesis GV80 certainly impresses and shows that the company has the potential to match or surpass established luxury brands. There’s more to like of course, and it’s all listed in our expert ratings below.

2023 Genesis GV80 Space

The GV80 offers 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second-row seats which fold down to a massive 84 cubic feet. This is one of the largest cargo capacities of any luxury midsize SUV with ample cargo space for everything from carry-on luggage to golf bags to move a box or a piece of furniture.

It’s important to note that when all seats are in use the optional third row reduces cargo room to just 11.6 cubic feet which is roughly enough for a small amount of groceries or two roller bags. Notably all models come standard with a hands-free power tailgate.

The GV80 is available in five- and seven-seat layouts. Synthetic leather upholstery heated and power-adjustable front seats and a heated steering wheel are standard. Upgrades include leather-trimmed ventilated front seats and heated and ventilated second-row seats.

The front seats are soft and supportive with ample headroom and legroom up front for taller occupants. Outward visibility in all directions is also quite good. The second row is just as comfortable with plenty of room for two adults or three kids in question. However, the available third row is too cramped for adults to sit comfortably. Best left to children.

2023 Genesis GV80 Engine

2023 Genesis GV80 Engine

Genesis offers two engine options for the 2023 GV80: a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.5 litter four-cylinder (2.5T) and a 375-horsepower twin-turbo 3.5 litter V6 (3.5T) Both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The base four-cylinder is far from being a rip-and-replace as its strong power output suggests. It feels smooth and punchy in everyday driving and its rich low-end torque helps get the big GV80 off the line and accelerates confidently.

The transmission starts smooth and shifts quickly Likewise it also provides strong passing power on the highway. The only disappointment with the turbocharged four-cylinder is the jittery sound of the engine under acceleration, but that’s a problem the V6 solves.

Quiet and refined the turbocharged V6 instils an almost effortless acceleration feel in the SUV. It can sprint the GV80 from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds and at higher speeds it delivers great thrust and power delivery.

2023 Genesis GV80 Performance

2023 Genesis GV80 Performance

The GV80 can be had with a four- or six-cylinder engine – both with turbocharging and the power figures look impressive on paper. Our test GV80 came with the larger 3.5liter V6 engine.

In our testing it did 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds on the test track. It’s pretty fast For a midsize SUV but most rivals with six-cylinder engines are slightly faster.

Aside from the rest of the driving experience the engine isn’t that great. The brakes are a bit abrupt at times the steering is a bit heavy even at the Comfort setting and while the handling isn’t sloppy most German SUVs feel tighter and the curves are more composed road. If you plan to use the GV80 primarily as a road cruiser it will do just fine and nothing else will matter.

2023 Genesis GV80 Interior

2023 Genesis GV80 Interior

Here are some successes and failures. On the one hand the different user interfaces look cool and offer different ways of interacting with the infotainment system. But the clickable knurled wheel is a bit clunky to operate.

The screen’s inconsistent menu structure doesn’t help. combination The resulting infotainment system is unintuitive and often distracting on the go.

The occupant space of the GV80 is comparable to that of a normal midsize SUV. One exception: the headroom is smaller. Access to the optional third row is better than most other vehicles in this segment, but the third row is very small and best reserved for kids.

Stepping into the heights feels a bit Above average, but the seat height is right at the hip level of the average adult making it easy to slip in. Thanks to the large windows and well-placed mirrors you can easily see outside the cabin. The optional surround-view camera is great and worth buying.

Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

Aside from its exterior styling the GV80’s infotainment system is probably its most controversial aspect. Beautifully presented and responsive the generous 14.5-inch touchscreen sits high on the dash making it easy to view but within reach.

Its function can be Multiple ways including physical climate controls on the center stack and an iPod-like click wheel on the center console. This redundancy helps with simple audio and air conditioning adjustments, but the embedded click wheel isn’t as intuitive when navigating multiple menus.

2023 Genesis GV80 Comfort

On the other hand the GV80’s digital instrument cluster is as good as they get. The display features crisp graphics and presents all relevant driving information in a stylish and straightforward manner.

  • Standard infotainment features: 14.5-inch touchscreen navigation Apple CarPlay Android Auto Bluetooth 4 USB ports Wireless device charging HD Radio satellite radio and 12-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: 21-speaker stereo
  • Additional Standard Features: Analogue Instrument Cluster Keyless Entry Push Button Start Remote Start Digital Key App Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control and Rear Sunshade
  • Other available features: 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster three-zone automatic climate control panoramic sunroof power soft-close door and power rear sunshade

2023 Genesis GV80 Technology

The GV80’s standard 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display is impressive. If the driver doesn’t want to reach for the screen the infotainment controller in the center console has been redesigned for 2023 to improve usability.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard There’s an 8.0-inch instrument cluster display, but higher trims include a 12.3-inch fully digital 3-D instrument cluster. The entry-level model comes with 12-speaker audio and if audiophiles go for a higher trim there’s a 21-speaker Lexicon Premium system with active noise cancellation.

2023 Genesis GV80 MPG

Like its smaller sibling the GV70 the GV80 features a pair of turbocharged engines both mated to an eight-speed automatic and an AWD system.

The entry-level 2.5 litter turbocharged four-cylinder makes a healthy 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque and our tests show it’s capable of 0-60 mph 6.4 seconds. EPA fuel economy figures are 20/24 mpg city/highway.

2023 Genesis GV80 MPG

Power-hungry buyers should look to the optional 3.5 litter twin-turbo V-6 engine which makes 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque.

Remember though that the V-6 model isn’t fast. Its 0-60 mph time is 6.0 seconds quicker than the four-cylinder GV80 by less than half a second. Add efficiency down to 18/23 mpg.

2023 Genesis GV80 Fuel Economy

The V6-equipped GV80 has an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in combined driving which is slightly less efficient than its V6-equipped rivals. Moving the GV80 to the road isn’t quite as quick as those engines either.

In our test we saw 20.7 mpg on a normalized mileage of 115 miles The evaluation route suggests the GV80 should meet its fuel economy estimates if driven with a little restraint.
