Volvo usually wins high marks for its interior styling and the XC40 is a prime example. The tall upright cabin feels airy SUV-like with large windows and excellent outside visibility. The cabin layout is luxurious and simple full of stylish Scandinavian style.

Some trimmed seats have synthetic suede inserts and leather upholstery. An optional lava rug wraps parts of the floor and doors in an attractive burnt orange material that contrasts with the charcoal leather. The XC40 is somewhere between a sub-compact and a compact SUV in size. Interior headroom isn’t as plentiful as some rivals but front-seat legroom is excellent. Cargo space averages 20.7 cubic feet.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 facelift is available with a choice of engines. The cheapest option is the 127bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol unit which is only available in the most basic Start specification.

In addition to this there are two 2.0 litter four-cylinder petrol engines with the B3 and B4 badges. The former produces 161bhp and 265Nm of torque while the latter makes 194bhp and 300Nm of torque.

Both engines come standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission, but all-wheel drive is optional on the B4 model. Next up is the plug-in hybrid. There are only two options to choose from here and both are based on the same 1.5 litter three-cylinder gasoline engine as the base model.

The front-wheel-drive T4 variant gets 127 hp from the petrol engine and 81 hp from the electric motor which Volvo says is enough to propel the 2023 Volvo XC40 from 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds.

The more expensive four-wheel-drive T5 model pairs the same electric motor with a 178-horsepower petrol engine. The extra power cuts the SUV’s 0-62mph time to 7.3 seconds. Both plug-in hybrid systems also claim WLTP fuel economy figures of between 112.8-134.5 mpg while emissions are between 47-57g/km CO2 depending on trim.

Buyers also get two electrified versions of the 2023 Volvo XC40. Front-wheel-drive models start at 43,550 pounds and make 228 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It’s powered by a 67 kWh battery and has a maximum range of 264 miles.

Prices start at £54,300 for the top-of-the-line four-wheel drive model. It’s backed by a larger 75 kWh battery pack and comes with a dual-motor electric powertrain producing 402bhp and 660Nm of torque. A 75.0 kWh battery pack is standard equipment and the EPA gives the XC40 Recharge an estimated range of 223 miles per charge.

This range promise allows the XC40 Recharge to compete with the Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace but is at a disadvantage compared to the Model Y which can Over 300 miles per charge. The XC40 Recharge will be able to charge on DC fast charging terminals and home chargers via a 240 volt outlet.
