The Nissan Pathfinder is a midsize three-row SUV that we’ve long praised for its spacious cabin and strong traction. Beyond these attributes however the previous-generation Pathfinder struggled to make an impact among its many competitors including the Honda Pilot and Kia Telluride. To increase interest Nissan has redesigned the Pathfinder for the 2022 model year.

Compared to the 2020 Pathfinder (no 2021 model) the new Pathfinder features more muscular and upright styling a new nine-speed automatic transmission with retuned steering additional interior storage and new technology features.

We’re also glad Nissan has revised the Pathfinder’s Suspension tuning for 2022. The ride quality of previous models in particular can be too volatile.

Especially in the tech space Pathfinder has grown a lot. It’s quieter more comfortable and better to drive than before. If you’re shopping for a family-friendly three-row SUV but know that you can get it from a Honda Pilot or More interior space in a Kia Telluride or Chevrolet Traverse or Volkswagen Atlas. The Nissan Pathfinder has 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. That’s enough to hold a few sets of golf clubs or a few carry-on suitcases.

Fold the third and second rows down however and cargo space increases to 45 and 80.5 cubic feet respectively. That should be a lot of Space for bulky items such as a patio set love seat or a season’s worth of covered bags. That said it offers less space than rivals like the Chevrolet Traverse Ford Explorer and Volkswagen Atlas.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is a three-row SUV with eight seats. A seven-seat layout is optional, and it swaps out the second-row benches for a pair of captain’s chairs with a removable center console.

The front seats are supportive and firm cushioning to stay comfortable even after a few hours on the road. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom in the first and second rows for taller passengers. The third row allows adults to sit in a pinch but is more suitable for children and teens.

Accessing the third row is also easy; even with a child car seat installed the second row of seats swivels and slides forward at the touch of a button. Outward visibility from the front and sides of the Pathfinder is good but with the many headrests on the way the rearview is okay.

Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats heated second-row seats a heated steering wheel and leather upholstery are available.

The interior of the new Pathfinder is a huge improvement over the old model. All three rows offer plenty of room for adults, although the rear seats are a bit of a pain to get in and out of.

Our test Pathfinder had second-row captain’s chairs. There is a center console between them This is easy to remove.Outward visibility is good. Large mirrors and upright windows help reduce blind spots and help with parking. The driving position also helps.

There are a lot of tweaks and all controls are within easy reach. The controls themselves are also simple. Nissan’s infotainment system is It’s nice, but it lacks the polish of some rival systems.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen or an optional 9-inch display. Both touchscreens respond well to input and have simple menus.

Both also feature various dashboard buttons and knobs for audio and climate controls. This setup makes it easy to adjust settings on the go.

The standard analogue gauge cluster works well and the optional 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster offers some neat tricks. Most notably it displays a useful navigation view between the tachometer and speedometer and provides turn-by-turn directions.

The new Pathfinder feels on par with its peers. The performance of the V6 is about the same as the Squad Leader. The transmission may be reluctant to downshift on hills but most of the time it shifts smoothly and unobtrusively. Braking performance is also mediocre.

Nissan has done a decent job tweaking the Pathfinder’s handling. It feels calm and stable when cornering and passengers don’t toss and turn on curvy roads.

Steering feels a bit heavier than some rivals, but in Japanese it’s direct and makes it easy to steer the sizable Pathfinder Japanese park.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder features a 3.5 litter V6 engine that makes 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard; all-wheel drive is available.

This V6 engine is perfect for Pathfinder. Acceleration is a little light at first but once it kicks in the engine skims the Pathfinder confidently around town.

The transmission exhibits smooth and mainly quick shifts although downshifts are sometimes slow to overtake other vehicles on the highway. All in all it’s far more refined than the CVT it replaces. Zero to 60 mph takes about 7 seconds.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is EPA-certified for 23 miles per gallon in combined driving in front-drive form. Platinum trims with more equipment will drop one mpg.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to do a full fuel economy test of the various Nissan Pathfinder models that day. However, our observed fuel economy with Nissan’s gauges is 22 mpg.

Since it comes with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank it’s not unreasonable to expect the Pathfinder to get nearly 400 miles on a tank.

The Pathfinder’s EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway is better than the midsize SUV segment average, but it’s not class-leading. Interestingly opting for all-wheel drive boosts the Pathfinder’s highway rating by 27 mpg.

The new Pathfinder is packed with tech, but none stand out in this category. Our test vehicle was equipped with Nissan’s Pro-Pilot Assist driver assistance suite.

It includes adaptive cruise control and a lane centring system. Adaptive cruise is linked to navigation, so it can slow down before arriving Curves on the road. Sounds good, but we found it more annoying than anything. Lane centring works fine for the most part but in our testing we noticed a few times it tried to steer the vehicle over the double yellow line.

The navigation system itself works well with clear turn-by-turn directions and an easy-to-use (if it looks a bit dated) interface. Voice commands are limited in scope and must be spoken in a specific way to work.

Our test vehicle was equipped with an Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay smartphone Integration though we have some issues with the latter. Wireless charging pads are great, but the Pathfinder needs more USB charging ports to avoid splitting charging time between passenger devices.

You can now add another name to a world full of competent three-row SUVs: the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. It offers a comfortable and quiet ride with little to nobody lean in moderate cornering.

The steering is responsive and doesn’t fuss or twitch. Brakes bring Pathfinder to a stop to reassuring regularity. You might not fall in love with the Pathfinder’s driving demeanour, but you certainly won’t hate it.

Under the hood of the crossover is Nissan’s beefy 3.5 litter naturally aspirated V6. In this incarnation the engine delivers 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. Riding on the fluid-filled engine mounts the V6 was as smooth as a baby’s bald head.

It drives either the front or all four wheels; Nissan calls the latter smart four-wheel drive through it doesn’t have a transfer case or other attributes of the classic part-time 4WD system. It’s front-drive biased, and it sends torque rearward when its electronics expect torque to occur Good for not waiting for the wheels to slip.

The most notable feature of the 4WD system is its direct coupling which allows torque to be transmitted directly across the clutch pack using oil pressure. This helps start from a standstill in low traction situations.

Every 2022 Pathfinder uses a new 9-speed automatic transmission with shift-by-wire selection. Steering wheel paddles allow you to manually select gears if you must, but we found the transmission was almost right in its selection.

Pathfinder with Smart 4WD system also has Mode selection. Standard Sport Eco-Slush/Ruts and Trailers are your options; all appear as pop-up notifications on the dash.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder comes in four trim levels: S SV SL and Platinum. All four models use a 3.5 litter V6 (284 horsepower 259 lb-ft of torque) mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to Nissan Safety Shield 360 Pathfinder offers another set of driver assistance features called ProPilot Assist. Features previously reserved primarily for the top trim level are available for the first time on Pathfinder’s SV and SL trims.

Pricing for the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder starts at $33,410 slightly above the segment average. Prices climb to $36,200 and $39,590 for mid-range SV and SL trims respectively while the top-of-the-line Platinum trim starts at $46,190.

The redesigned 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is a better SUV than the model it replaces. With an elegant interior the Pathfinder offers plenty of room for the whole family a polished powertrain and pleasing driving dynamics. It also won praise for its intuitive infotainment system and array of safety features feature.

The revamp won’t help the Pathfinder overtake top competitors in the midsized SUV segment like the Kia Telluride but it at least closes the gap on the popular Honda Pilot the Toyota Highlander and the Ford Explorer.

The Pathfinder is a big and stylish SUV with plenty of space for seven adults and their gear. It’s available with front- or all-wheel drive, and it has standard V6 power.

The Pathfinder rides smoothly and handles competently, but it’s not particularly agile. Towing capacity is a healthy 6000 pounds. The Pathfinder comes standard with automatic emergency breaking adaptive cruise control lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.
