The Canyon has a comfortable and commodious interior with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It rides smoothly on the road and can
The redesigned 2023 GMC Canyon midsized pickup shares its skeleton with the Chevrolet Colorado and its beating heart with the larger GMC Sierra, but GM has positioned the Canyon as a more off-road-friendly truck. We’ll see how it stacks up against the Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator and Nissan border etc.
2023 GMC Canyon Review
The 2023 GMC Canyon not only introduces the third generation of this midsized pickup, but it also becomes the second truck (after the GMC Sierra) to add AT4X off-road trim. Canyon gets its first redesign since its 2015 relaunch as is its corporate cousin Chevrolet Colorado.
Although it’s much more expensive than its bow tie, but, but relative the previous-generation Canyon had too much in common with the Colorado. GMC is looking to correct this with a series of changes making the Canyon more upscale and capable than before.
These updates include improved off-road suspension on each Canyon more muscular styling and technical additions that modernize the cabin and help the driver off-road. Compared to all Colorado trims the Canyon offers superior ground clearance and a nearly 4″ wide track Excludes Trail Boss and ZR2.
The new AT4X is an evolution of the AT4 trim Canyon introduced for the 2020 model year, and it’s an excellent addition — GMC says the AT4 was the most popular of last year’s Canyon trim levels.
AT4X adds another inch of suspension lift More unique bottom protection Bumpers for extra approach and departure clearance Multimeric shock absorbers and electronic front and rear axle lockers among other features.
2023 GMC Canyon Engine
At the height of its popularity the outgoing GMC Canyon came with a choice of three different engines and transmissions. You can get an entry-level 2.5 litter I-4 with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission and an optional 2.8 litter Duramax Diesel I-4 with a six-speed automatic or standard transmission 3.6 litter V-6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
For 2023 GMC ditched all previous powertrains in favour of a turbocharged 2.7 litter I-4 sourced from a larger full-size Sierra 1500 and a new second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission.
If you’ve been following GM-related truck news you’ll notice that the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado also switches to the same 2.7 litter engine. However, Chevrolet offers three power levels ranging from 237 hp to 310 hp and torque from 259 lb-ft to 430 lb-ft.
GMC deployment only The hottest version of the 2.7 litter engine in the Canyon line-up which means every 2023 Canyon gets 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. That’s combined with the horsepower and torque of the V-6 in the Nissan Frontier;
GMC (and Chevrolet) similarly crush all members of the torque department The 2.3 litter turbocharged I-4 (producing 310 lb-ft) in a Ford Ranger is a staggering amount. Even Canyon’s outgoing 2.8 litter Duramax diesel engine will only produce 369 pound-feet of power.
While fuel economy is still unknown and GMC officials may be quoted for some time the new 2.7 litter engine is expected to return better than the outgoing 2.5 litter engine. While your mileage will certainly vary the outgoing base engine is rated a whopping 26 mpg highway, while the 2.7-liter-powered GMC Sierra 1500 has a highway rating of up to 22 mpg we don’t think 26 is out of the question.
As far as performance goes the new 2.7 litter engine covers that too. The 2023 GMC Canyon has a maximum load rating of 1,640 pounds in the two-wheel-drive Elevation version. Opting for the AT4 brings it down to 1550 pounds while the upscale Denali has a payload rating of 1360 lb.
The AT4X limits its payload to 1250 pounds with its off-road add-on; the more fully equipped AT4X Edition 1 Package brings that number down to 1010 pounds. To put the last figure in perspective with all five seats filled with some regular Joes you’d There been just enough payload reserves left to throw a cooler on the bed.
