2022 Nissan Altima Review
The 2022 Nissan Altima is its available variable-compression turbo engine or VC-Turbo. Nissan says it’s been working on the technology for more than a decade, and it offers the power of a V6 with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. Read: 2022 Nissan Rogue Review.
However, you can only get it with the sporty SR trim and front-wheel drive. Frankly it falls short in both the power and real-world efficiency departments.
The 2022 Altima is competitive with other midsize cars. It has a unique sense of style the front seats provide long-distance comfort its standard engine offers a good mix of performance and efficiency, and you get the all-wheel-drive Altima.
In addition, Altima has many advanced driving aids such as ProPilot Assist. Unfortunately for Nissan the Altima’s rivals offer most or all of these same attributes often in a more eye-catching package.
2022 Nissan Altima Space
The Altima’s 15.4-cubic-foot trunk is average for a midsize car. The rear seats fold down but don’t lie flat, and the trunk hinge takes up some usable space.Altima can accommodate up to five people. Both rows are cushioned and roomy.
The Altima’s rear outboard seats have two full sets of LATCH connectors and the rear center seat has a tether anchor. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given this LATCH system a Good+ rating indicating that it is one of the easiest and most versatile systems out there to use.
2022 Nissan Altima Interior
A simple dashboard and user-friendly switchgear are provided in the Altima’s cabin. Interior materials vary by trim level, but everything is a marked improvement over the previous-generation Altima. Our SV test vehicle has attractive looks and hard plastics Rarely attracts attention.
The flat-bottomed steering wheel and faux carbon fibre are a bit much here especially since there are no paddle shifters or selectable drive modes on the SV. Still-soft armrests make cruising and sitting in traffic more bearable. Front seats can accommodate wide All body types, but we felt the lumbar support was too aggressive.
The roomy rear seats are very comfortable with ample legroom. We put 6 carry-on bags in the Altima’s trunk for a total of 17 bags with the rear seats folded. Those numbers match the Camry we tested but both Not up to the Accord’s 19 bags.
Unfortunately the Nissan’s rear seats don’t fold fully flat and must be released using the handles in the trunk which is inconvenient. The Altima has decent storage in the front seats the door pockets are narrow but deep and there’s a useful tray in the back Front of the center console.
Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation
A simple Nissan Connect infotainment system is standard on the Altima. You can operate it via the menu on the touchscreen or the physical controls on the center console. But touchscreen input can lag, and you’ll have to move up beyond the base trim to get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

2022 Nissan Altima Comfort
Altima is a quiet place away from daily traffic. The front seats are generally comfortable, but some drivers may wish for more thigh support. Engine noise is well isolated even under hard acceleration.
Less appealing is the constant stream of tiny bumps you feel as you drive over rough surfaces. Under these conditions the Altima’s ride seems to be busy all the time and the bigger impact can be quite jarring.
2022 Nissan Altima Technology
The Altima’s basic infotainment system is adequate but doesn’t wow you. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity are standard, and the audio system is easy to operate. Sound quality is OK. In our tests Bluetooth operation was a bit finicky, but calls were clear.
Altima’s ProPilot Assist system including lane centring and low-speed adaptive cruise control is pretty decent. Adaptive cruise control works very well with very little traffic correction.
2022 Nissan Altima Storage
The Altima feels small to drive but has a lot of room inside. It’s 193 inches long 73 inches wide 57 inches tall and has a wheelbase of 111 inches. Each of these sizes is within an inch of the Accord and Camry. The Altima’s curb weight ranges from 3,244 to 3,492 pounds more than The Accord is slightly inferior to the Camry.
There’s enough head and legroom for a 6-footer to sit front and rear which is impressive but is actually typical of midsize sedans these days.
Parents should be aware that Altima’s fixed head restraints can be frustrating when trying to secure a child seat. As always we recommend bringing a child seat during the test drive.
At 15.4 cubic feet the Altima has a little more trunk space than the Camry but both the Accord and Hyundai Sonata beat it in the 16-cubic-foot range. Aside from the Altima’s trunk the other comparisons are still pretty bulky.
2022 Nissan Altima Engine
Front-wheel-drive models come standard with a 188-horsepower 2.5 litter four-cylinder; all-wheel-drive models have 182 horses.
The SR trim features a 248-horsepower 2.0 litter turbocharged four-cylinder. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is included.
The base engine is fine for your daily commute but shoppers looking for a little more glamour may prefer a turbocharged engine. The CVT paired with both engines is responsive.
2022 Nissan Altima Performance
The Altima won’t win you over with great acceleration or braking. Our test all-wheel-drive Altima had the 2.5 litter engine, and it did 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds.
However, the CVT automatic transmission is finely tuned to help make the Altima an almost invisible partner in the day-to-day work drive.
Another highlight is the stable handling. You will confidently guide the Altima through fast sweeping curves. But this handling ability underscores the Altima’s overly light and ambiguous steering.
2022 Nissan Altima Gas Mileage
The Altima delivers an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway which is excellent for a midsize car. Models with all-wheel drive get 26/36 mpg city/highway while those with the turbo engine get 25/34 mpg.

We tested an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined (26 city/36 highway) for the all-wheel-drive Altima. It posted an impressive 34 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route. Chances are you can get pretty good fuel economy from the Altima.

The Altima combines a 2.5 litter four-cylinder engine with continuously variable transmission technology to provide reasonably dynamic acceleration something Nissan has been using for decades and more efficient than some other CVT.
That said it’s still sluggish from the start It takes a moment before the revs pick up and acceleration can be felt. On the road the Altima is paired with increased roll stiffness and reduced longitudinal stiffness resulting in more responsive cornering and a good ride.
SR models offer firmer suspension tone and driving on winding roads is a lot of fun. The Honda Accord is still better than the Altima SR but don’t count the Nissan as boring.

Nissan sells the 2022 Altima midsize sedan in five trim levels: S SV SR SL and Platinum. A 2.5 litter four-cylinder (188 hp 180 lb-ft torque) engine is standard and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends power to the car’s front wheels.
All-wheel drive The system is optional on the SV SR and SL and standard on the Platinum. AWD engine output drops to 182 hp and 178 lb-ft.
