The 2023 Honda Civic is a compact car that has been completely redesigned. It’s now available as a sedan hatchback or coupe. The sedan and hatchback have standard driver assists such as adaptive cruise control and automated emergency breaking. The Civic is powered by a 1.5 litter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower. It’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Base The engine is a 2.0 litter inline-4 capable of producing 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a 180-horsepower 1.5 litter turbocharged inline-4 motor if more power is needed. All engines are mated to a CVT transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission is also available.
Everything has changed in the Honda Civic, although you probably wouldn’t have guessed it from the outside. As part of Honda’s commitment to building an all-electric model line-up the new Civic is only available as a hybrid.
2023 Honda Civic Review
The 2023 Honda Civic is the latest version of one of the best-selling vehicles on the road today. The 11th-generation Civic can enter its second year as a sedan and hatchback but with at least one major change: the hatchback-only Civic Type R returns.
Honda teases the new car For months though the carmaker hasn’t released final specs. That said don’t expect drastic changes compared to the outgoing Type R. You can read more about everything we know on our dedicated Civic Type R page.
Otherwise, we don’t expect any major changes to the standard Civic sedan or hatchback in 2023. Not that it needs to change. This latest Civic improves upon its predecessor with more mature styling better onboard technology and driver assistance systems and improved fuel efficiency.
This is a great all-rounder Small sedans whether you’re interested in buying a car on a budget (LX) with luxury features (Touring) fun to drive (Si) or something in between can easily fit your needs.
The previous Civic was riotous with slashes of extra air intakes and a general sense of visual abruptness. The new Civic maintains a largely similar fastback hatchback shape, but its styling is much quieter almost to the point of being somewhat anonymous.
It’s a nice enough but very quiet car Handsome only the neat detailing and lighting around the grille help it stands out. The only styling that’s really carried over from the previous model is the chunky brake lights. It’s part of Honda’s overall move for softer more sober styling.
2023 Honda Civic Interior
If the outside is a little disappointing the inside is not. The Civic’s cabin takes the same basic shape as the recently introduced HR-V crossover but adds extra mass. Everything you touch feels very high end and the layout is very simple and easy to use – Not always a given these days.
At 9 inches the central touchscreen isn’t the largest, but the menu system is fairly easy to use, and it comes with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Helpfully Honda insists on physical controls for things like stereo volume and dual-zone air conditioning system, so the Civic’s cabin is really easy to find your way around. The driver’s digital instrument panel (7 inches on the high-spec model 10.2 inches on the standard) is also a simple and clear model.
2023 Honda Civic Comfort
The Civic’s suspension does a good job of smoothing out road bumps. It’s not as comfortable as some other small cars, but we think that’s an acceptable trade-off given the car’s sporty handling.
The front seats are supportive, and the leather upholstery is breathable Helps you stay cool in hot weather. Note however that the seat lacks adjustable lumbar support which can be a problem for those with lumbar sensitivity.
The climate-control layout is a marked improvement over the previous-generation setup and the cabin has high air vent coverage. Road noise is noticeable at any speed and can be quite intrusive on rough surfaces. Thankfully wind noise is softer and the rest of the interior feels solid Constructed and vibration free
2023 Honda Civic Performance
We tested a Civic Touring sedan with a turbocharged engine. On our test track it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds. That’s a bit faster than the average for the small sedan class. It feels a little lazy offline, but the power builds up steadily and quickly,
So you never feel the need to like, so with the base 2.0 litter engine. The Civic’s continuously variable automatic transmission is fine-tuned to deliver smooth power and quick response when you need a dash of speed.
The Civic is stable and sporty through turns instilling confidence and providing some entertainment while driving. The tires make a lot of noise, but they maintain amazing grip on the road which also helps with braking performance. Ultimately this Civic is simple It’s effortless to drive, and it’s exactly what we want in an affordable sedan.
2023 Honda Civic Technology
The Civic’s touchscreen infotainment system sits high on the dash to help you focus on the road. It has an intuitive on-screen menu that responds quickly to your input.
The graphics of the optional integrated navigation system look a bit dated, but the map function is fine. Our touring trim has a larger 9-inch screen while lower trims have a smaller 7-inch version.
Most users will likely choose to use standard Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphones Projecting anyway. In Touring trim these systems connect wirelessly to your phone. If you prefer you can use a USB cable which we found provides faster connection speeds.
2023 Honda Civic Test Drive
Even better is the Civic’s fuel economy if you’re going to drive long distances. The new direct-injected 2.0 litter gasoline engine doesn’t directly power the front wheels but instead is driven by a pair of electric motors that Honda calls an e-CVT (electronic continuous variable transmission).
Power and torque ratings of 183hp and 315Nm respectively are decent, but the Civic never feels more brisk than pleasant. Even in Sport mode which improves throttle response and adds a little weight to the steering driving the Civic feels languidly relaxed.
This is a car optimized to be affordable. On a mixed route that included mountain highways and urban sprawl we handily beat Honda’s official figure of 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres. By the way that’s mostly in sport mode and the A/C blast keeps us cool 33 degrees high temperature.
If we switch to Eco mode and drive a little lighter we’ll do better again. Even in a world of ever-increasing fuel prices the Civic doesn’t break the bank when you visit a gas station. A CO2 rating of 108g/km means it’s also tax friendly.
2023 Honda Civic Fuel Economy & MPG
The EPA estimates the Civic Touring (with the turbo engine) will achieve 34 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The EX is even better at 36 mpg combined.
Either way the Civic is around 3 to 4 mpg ahead of its most direct competitor. We managed to hit 33.4 mpg in our Civic Touring test The car is on our hybrid driving assessment route. That’s not quite as high as we’d like given the EPA numbers, but it’s still an impressive performance.
2023 Honda Civic Models
The Honda Civic is available as a sedan or hatchback. The sedan is available in five trim levels: LX Sport EX Touring and Si. The hatchback has similar LX Sport EX-L and Sport Touring trims.
By 2023 the hatchback will also offer a new high-performance Type R trim We’re still waiting on the final specs for this model.
2023 Honda Civic Prices & Release Date
Honda hasn’t announced a release date for the 2023 Civic, but we know the next-generation Civic Type R will go on sale this fall. We currently estimate fall release dates for the standard Civic sedan and Civic hatchback.
We expect pricing for the 2023 Civic to remain close to that of the current model ranging from $23,365 to $30,865 (including destination charges). As for the 2023 Civic Type R we estimate a price increase of about $38,000 from the previous MSRP. Is the R-type price more than $40,000 or $43,000 is still an open question.
The Civic has faded from the radar of most Irish buyers in recent years, but this new model deserves its place back. It’s not the most exciting thing nor the most exciting, but it’s particularly satisfying with its impressively high-quality cabin and ultra-frugal hybrid engine.
This little Honda has amazing performance. This is especially true for the sporty handling which allows the more energetic driver to actually have some fun. Typically, these features are reserved for more performance-focused models like the Civic Si and Type R.
The 2023 Honda Civic will be a midsized sedan that offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. It will have a comfortable ride and many standard features making it a great choice for families and commuters alike. The Civic will come with a choice of two engines:
A turbocharged four-cylinder or a naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Both engines will be mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive will be standard, but all-wheel drive will be available as an option. Prices for the 2023 Honda Civic are not yet available, but we expect them to start around $25,000.
This Civic replaces the busy design of its predecessor with a simpler more elegant style. It removes a lot of clutter and fake vents for a more mature interpretation but still leaves room for more exciting treatments.
