As one of Ford’s most versatile vehicles the Ford Explorer has earned a lot of accolades. The three-row Explorer sits between the midsized five-seat Ford Edge and the full-size Expedition making it ideal for family hauling tasks.
It also has the strongest towing capacity in its class and Whether you’re looking for high fuel efficiency or sporty performance there should be something for your engine line-up.
SUVs are more popular than ever since the Explorer debuted more than 30 years ago. With nearly every US auto-maker offering at least one SUV in its line-up the Explorer has tough competition. Some of midsize three-row models include the Honda Pilot Hyundai Palisade Kia Telluride and Mazda CX-30.
The Explorer isn’t quite as refined as the class-leading leader and prices can get into luxury-car territory on higher trim levels.
2022 Ford Explorer Space
This Ford has 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row 47.9 cubic feet behind the second row and a total of 87.8 cubic feet behind the first row. Those numbers lag the class-leading leaders, but they still fit in a three-row SUV even if all trunks have enough room for a few suitcases seat in use.
Explorer can accommodate up to 7 people. Models with second-row captain’s chairs have six seats. There’s plenty of headroom in all three rows,
But legroom becomes tight in the second and third rows. In addition, the third row seats are very low on the ground making it difficult to sit in Adults sit comfortably.
The second and third row outboard seats have four complete sets of LATCH connectors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the LATCH system the second-highest rating of “Acceptable” because of its ease of use. The setup is mostly user-friendly, but the tether can be confusing to other hardware.
2022 Ford Explorer Comfort
The Explorer’s front seats are stylish and comfortable. But we don’t recommend the optional massager — the mechanism behind the massage can make the seat feel bumpy when closed. As you go back to 2nd and 3rd the comfort of the seat gradually decreases a Row.
Our Explorer Limited test car drove smoothly most of the time, but minor road imperfections were more pronounced than some other SUVs.
Operating the automatic climate control system may require more manual adjustments than expected; for example when you lower the temperature the vents don’t pull out as much air.
Another downside is that the explorer isn’t as quiet as it should be. Engine sound There’s no good masking, and you can hear gusts of wind noise even at moderate highway speeds.

While the interior design may be anything but bland the Explorer’s cabin is practical and comfortable—at least for those in the first two rows. Getting into the standard third row is fairly easy thanks to a mechanism that moves the second-row seats out of the way at the touch of a button.
Once back there older kids and adults will find the seats too close to the floor to be uncomfortable. Competitors like the Chevrolet Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas offer more comfort in the third row. We managed to fit four suitcases behind the Ford third row, and we hold a total of 31 bags and the rear folds flat.
Explorer Infotainment Bluetooth and Navigation
Somewhat unusually the Explorer’s base infotainment system gets more accolades than its upgraded system. This is mainly because the available 10.1-inch touchscreen has smaller on-screen buttons its vertical orientation means the smartphone integration system is not as large,
And It’s easy to see because they’ll be horizontal. Going for a model with a bigger screen also means you lose a small smartphone-sized screen storage cabinet.

2022 Ford Explorer Performance
If your priorities include balanced handling and strong acceleration the Explorer is a three-row SUV. Unlike many other SUVs in this class it feels eager and light when you corner. Grip is also great.
The latest Explorer can handle a lot of power and Ford takes full advantage of that. The solid turbocharged four-cylinder base engine easily outpaces the competition. For those who think too much is never enough the Explorer ST has an insanely turbocharged V6.
Both are aided by a 10-speed spread. It launches faithfully when you need to but in city traffic its shifts are too indecisive when you just flick the throttle up and down.
2022 Ford Explorer Engine
You can choose between two engines in Explorer. A turbocharged 2.3 litter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque is standard. This engine should satisfy most shoppers. It provides great transfer power and helps the car accelerate quickly.
For something more powerful there’s a twin-turbocharged 3.0 litter V6. The engine produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission which runs smoothly but hesitates to shift gears when more power is needed.
2022 Ford Explorer Gas Mileage
At the time of writing the EPA has no estimates for the 2022 Explorer’s base engine but the nearly identical 2021 model has EPA estimates of 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway which is above the midsize SUV-class average.
2022 model gets fuel with rear-wheel drive and V6 The economy is estimated at 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. With 4WD the city rating remains at 18 mpg, but the highway estimate drops to 24 mpg.
2022 Ford Explorer Technology
Each Explorer features an 8-inch touchscreen Sync 3 infotainment system and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility.
The Limited features built-in navigation and a powerful Bang & Olufsen premium audio system. Don’t be tempted by the optional 10.1″ Vertical touch screen. Its slimmer profile doesn’t fit the Apple CarPlay Android Auto and rearview camera displays.
Explorer is equipped with driving safety aids. All Explorers come standard with automatic emergency braking lane-keep assist cross-traffic and blind-spot monitoring and automatic high beams.
2022 Ford Explorer Storage
The Explorer’s cargo room is spacious. It’s tighter than some other SUVs thanks to the third-row seats up, but you can still fit three or four rolling suitcases in the back. Plenty of gadgets up front to store your odds and ends and child seats are easy to install in the middle row.
The Explorer’s rear-drive architecture makes it particularly good for towing even if the 5,000-pound weight rating isn’t particularly prominent.
2022 Ford Explorer Value
You don’t have to look very far or have a hard time seeing unsightly crevices and mediocre design details in plastic interior trim. These would be understandable if the car was cheap, but it’s not.
The well-equipped top model in the race costs less than the low-end Explorer XLT There are minimal options. What’s more Explorer’s toughest competition offers stronger warranty coverage.
You have to be the kind of guy who puts a lot of emphasis on mountain agility and powertrain performance to offset those shortcomings.
On paper at least the 2.3liter Eco-Boost will give you better fuel economy. But we found it difficult to replicate EPA ratings in the real world. Our test results for the Explorer were no better than those of its competitors.
2022 Ford Explorer Models
The 2022 Ford Explorer SUV is a midsize SUV with three rows of seats. It comes in eight trim levels: the base XLT Limited ST-Line Timberline ST King Ranch and Platinum.
Most models come standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine but a hybrid V6 powertrain and high-performance V6 are found on higher trims.

The entry-level Explorer has an MSRP of $33,245 which is about average for a midsized SUV. At a whopping $53,610 the King Ranch trim beats the top trims from many competitors. Ford also offers the Explorer Hybrid which we reviewed separately.
If you want a mid-size SUV with a somewhat peppy pace you could probably do worse than the Ford Explorer. Its powerful engine and steady handling help it delivers confidence on the road. For home carriers though there are better options. Seat comfort in the second and third rows is very important There’s nothing wrong with this car’s cabin both in terms of material quality and design.
Assuming that there are no major delays the all-new Ford Explorer will finally go on sale in the summer of 2021 as a 2022 model. The current-generation Ford Explorer has been on sale since the 2011 model year, so it’s well overdue for a replacement. The new Explorer will ride on an all-new platform that is shared with the Lincoln Aviator. This means that the new Explorer will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
