The all-new Toyota Tacoma has been completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. The new Tacoma is bigger more capable and more comfortable than ever before. It’s also loaded with the latest technology and safety features. Prices for the 2022 Tacoma start at $32,490.
The Tacoma may be the best-selling mid-size truck in America, but that doesn’t make it the best. Instead, it’s a solid all-rounder best appreciated in one of its off-road forms—if you’re going to take it off-road. We rate it 5.0 out of 1.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Review
The Tacoma is not only a stalwart in the midsized truck segment but also a stalwart in the off-road community.
It has provided buyers with a competent canvas for countless off-road upgrades over the decades and Toyota has steadily added more and more aggressive off-road options to the Tacoma line-up.
2022 Toyota has made some aesthetic and mechanical tweaks to its relatively new Trail Edition while the powerful TRD Pro gets even better with unique suspension components.
Introduced last year the Trail Edition was a limited production model based on the budget SR5 trim level and came with some off-road and utility goodies like a lockable bed box.
For 2022 Toyota has made a locking rear differential standard equipment and a slight suspension lift (1.1 inches 0.5 inch front lift and rear lift compared to other Tacomas) to give the truck a little extra capability and clearance off-road.
It also borrows the TRD Pro’s traditional grille and adds bronze lettering. Hey do you like funky bronze wheels? It has these too. For the TRD Pro it has slightly more suspension lift than the Trail Edition (1.5 inches up front but still 0.5 inches in the rear) plus new wheel and tire settings.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Space
This Toyota truck is available with a 6′ 1″ bed or a 5′ bed. Either way you don’t need sheets. Composite bed liners are standard as are removable tailgates and a bed rail system with adjustable tie-downs.
There are only a few small-item storage compartments around the cabin including a pair under and behind the rear seats on double-cab models and small under-seat storage on accessible-cab models.
Access Cabs can accommodate up to 4 people while Double Cab Tacomas can accommodate 5 people. Both variants lack headroom. Rear-seat space is also in short supply especially in Access Cab models which only offer small jump seats behind small rear hinged doors.
Double-cab models are a smart choice if you need to carry passengers in the rear on a regular basis as they offer more space as well as traditional doors to access the area. However even the double cab doesn’t offer as much backseat space as some rival crew cab setups.
In addition to the front The seat is low to the floor, but the driver’s seat adjustment allows you to find a more comfortable driving position.
The rear outboard seats have two full sets of LATCH connectors and the rear centre seat has a tether anchor.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated this LATCH system the second-lowest rated Marginal for its ease of use as the tether on it is hard to find, and The lower anchor is too deep in the seat.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Performance
The base 2.7 litter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower. It’s standard on SR and SR5 trims but lacks expect meaningful power. You might prefer the upgraded 278-horsepower 3.5 litter V6 which is offered in the first two trims and standard on other models.
But don’t expect too much from this engine. The V6 helps the truck move faster, but it doesn’t make it particularly fast.
The Tacoma is the only pickup with a manual transmission and most reviewers prefer it to the standard six-speed automatic which is often difficult to find the right gear in.
Models with the four-cylinder engine get 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway which is below the compact pickup average. With the V6 engine the Tacoma gets up to 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
Tacoma Ride and Handling
The Tacoma has stable handling and responsive steering. However, the ride quality is stiff, so you’ll feel bumps on uneven surfaces.
The Tacoma is known for its excellent off-road capability. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims are particularly well suited to the track as they offer unique suspension tuning and off-road-oriented shock absorbers locking rear differential and skid plates.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Interior
Sticking to your roots is commendable, but it’s not good for a Tacoma cabin. Practical layouts and materials are from a different era. Higher trim levels rely heavily on hard plastics and minimalist materials.
However, the Tacoma finally offers a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Still cramped quarters are a Tacoma staple. The back seat of the crew cabin is where the Tacoma’s passengers have to squeeze because legroom is terrible.
Tacoma’s 5ft or 6ft beds have more than enough volume, but it’s disappointing that there are very few lockers and There is limited carry-on space inside. Storage capacity inside the Tacoma is limited and the crew compartment we tested was only able to fit nine carry-on items in the back seat. Aside from the centre console bin there aren’t many storage bins or cabbies available.
Tacoma Infotainment Bluetooth and Navigation
The standard infotainment system gets rave reviews for its intuitive touch and physical controls. You can also easily integrate your smartphone with a touchscreen interface via standard Apple CarPlay Android Auto .

2022 Toyota Tacoma Comfort
The Tacoma has never been an unpleasant truck, but the changes introduced for 2020 make it even more pleasant. A fully adjustable 10-way driver’s seat is standard on V6 trucks providing remote comfort for drivers of nearly all sizes and sizes.
Thicker side windows reduce wind noise compared to previous years although the Colorado and Ridgeline still have an advantage here. The same goes for ride quality as the Tacoma is still trucker than its smoothest rival. As for the climate system it has efficient heating and cooling easy to adjust

- Length: 17 feet, 8.3 inches
- Height: 5 feet, 10.6 inches
- Curb weight: 3,915 to 4,505 pounds
- Gross vehicle weight: 5,600 pounds
2022 Toyota Tacoma Towing and Storage
The Tacoma’s truck bed is ideal. It’s made of composite material that doesn’t require a bed cover and has an enviable combination of fixed and removable tie-downs. Loading is easy because the tailgate opens very low, and its bedside isn’t very high.
Tacoma does lag behind some others It has a maximum towing capacity of 6,800 pounds, but the deficit isn’t huge.
Internal storage for small items is adequate. Folding the rear seats down into the cargo position is a bit of a hassle but as a result it offers better storage than everything except the Ridgeline and Gladiator. Installing child safety seats is easy but larger rear-facing and infant seats Possibly into the front passenger room.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Fuel Economy
The 3.5 litter V6 and six-speed automatic combined deliver 20 mpg (18 city/22 highway) in four-wheel drive and 21 mpg in rear-wheel drive. Our testing leads us to believe that these ratings are achievable and accurate.
We tested the 2016 TRD 4WD Off-Road for over a year and averaged 18.6 mpg over 40,000 miles of use. We were able to beat the highway rating on a couple of road trips and there’s good reason our truck could shave off more than 1 mpg.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Models
The Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size pickup available in six trim levels: SR SR5 TRD Sport TRD Off-Road Limited and TRD Pro.
The SR and SR5 come standard with a 2.7 litter four-cylinder engine that makes 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. These trims are optional – all other trims are standard — is a 3.5 litter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet.
Six-speed automatic transmissions are common across the line-up, although some trims offer a six-speed manual transmission in conjunction with the V6.
