The 2022 Honda Pilot will be a complete redesign. It will be based on the same platform as the upcoming Odyssey and Ridgeline. The new Pilot will have standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. Three rows of seats will be standard, and the second row will have captain’s chairs in most trims. A nine-speed automatic transmission will be standard, and a turbocharged V6 engine will be optional.
The 2022 Honda Pilot is one of our favourite three-row 2022 SUVs thanks to its well-designed roomy interior and smooth ride. Additional benefits include better-than-average fuel economy and a smooth powerful V6 engine. Until the Kia Telluride and The modern Palisade came along and shook things up. Rumour has it that Honda wants to redesign the ageing 2022 Honda Pilot — which has been around in its current form since 2016 — in 2023 to bring it back to the top of the family-friendly model.
2022 Honda Pilot Review
The Pilot is only a year or so away from a full redesign but the three-row SUV has aged well and still offers a great design for families that need the extra space. We rate it 8.5 out of 10. (Read more about the 2022 SUV cars.)
For now though Honda is tightening its belt by discontinuing the LX and EX which were previously the Pilot’s two most affordable models. That means the 2022 Pilot line-up starts with the EX-L. It doesn’t matter if you’re buying a well-equipped SUV in the first place but on a budget There’s no question that this year’s Pilot’s higher starting price will put shoppers off.
In the three-row midsized SUV class we think the Palisade and Telluride remain the top performers. There’s also the roomy Volkswagen Atlas and the refined Mazda CX-9 to consider. But overall the Pilot does a lot of things well and has few major flaws.
2022 Honda Pilot Performance
The pilot is an amazing performer. We tested the Pilot Elite and recorded a 7.0-second 0-60 mph sprint which is a bit quicker than most competing midsized three-row SUVs. Slowing down is also easy.
Brake feel is relatively consistent and easy to use in everyday driving. The Pilot’s emergency stop distance from 60 mph (129 feet in our testing) is average for this class of vehicle.
Twisting mountain roads are no problem for the Pilot—the SUV feels more nimble than most. Steering is precise, but there is little sense of the road. The Pilot’s available AWD system is great for slippery surfaces, but this SUV lacks ground clearance and specific Off-road aids such as hill descent control to make, but it truly off-road capable.
2022 Honda Pilot Interior
The Pilot exhibits typical Honda efficiency clever use of space and practical features. The first and second rows are spacious. The third row is large enough for occasional adult use but not as roomy as the third row in a Kia Telluride or Volkswagen Atlas. Accessing the third row is Also a bit narrow.
Most drivers can find a suitable seat, but taller drivers may need more steering wheel adjustment. The upright seating position provides the driver with a wider field of vision than the Honda Odyssey minivan.
2022 Honda Pilot Comfort
It may be an outdated design but the 2022 Honda Pilot makes the most of its interior. We rated it a 9 out of 10 scoring all three rows for passenger capacity as well as roomy cargo room.
Leather seats are now standard, and the front seats are well bolstered with standard heating and optional cooling. The second row can be used in a bench or captain’s chair configuration. Access is excellent and passengers will find over 38 inches of legroom once on board.
The third line is Access to intersections is easy thanks to a button that flips the middle seat forward. There are 32 inches of legroom in the third row even for adults.
There’s about 17 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row upright which expands to 46 cubes when the third row is folded and 80 cubic feet with the second row down.
2022 Honda Pilot Technology
Overall the Pilot’s touchscreen system is easy to use. The navigation system is responsive and the 10-speaker sound system sounds great. Touring and Elite models include a Wi-Fi hotspot users using the Honda Cabin Control app can connect to in-car Wi-Fi and control certain things Such as rear cabin temperature and music playlists.
As for driver assistance features the Pilot’s adaptive cruise control isn’t as smooth as some rival SUV systems when it comes to accelerating and braking. It also only works above 20 mph which is a shame for drivers caught in stop-and-go traffic.
Lane Keeping Assist is active It’s fine on straight roads but can be overly intrusive if the road starts to curve.
2022 Honda Pilot Storage
Pilot is a useful tool when you need to carry a lot. While cargo room is sturdy—16.5 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum of 83.8 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded—it lags behind the segment leaders.
There’s still plenty of storage space underneath Very useful for loading floors and spaces. Large pockets in the centre console and cleverly configurable small-item storage are among the many places to store stuff in the cabin.
Car seat installation space in the second row is very large, and car seat anchors are easily accessible. The rear tether point is at the bottom of the second row of seats, and it’s easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. A one-click swipe to access the third row helps facilitate seat installation.
The AWD Pilot has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds matching the capabilities of most V6-powered three-row SUVs. Front-wheel-drive Pilots are limited to 3,500 pounds.
2022 Honda Pilot Safety
Thanks to adaptive cruise control active lane control and automatic emergency braking the 2022 Honda Pilot will do its best to avoid accidents. We rated it a 7 out of 10 based on this standard technology and NHTSA’s 5-star rating.
However, the IHS said an “acceptable” rating for front passenger protection prevented the large SUV from earning its vaunted Top Safety Pick award. Especially since its headlights are either “good” or “acceptable.”
2022 Honda Pilot Fuel Economy
The 2022 Honda Pilot could benefit from a hybrid model. Instead, it scored a mere 4 out of 10 thanks to the rather thirsty V-6. With front-wheel drive the EPA rates the 2022 Pilot 20 mpg city 27 highway 23 combined. The all-wheel-drive version only slips to 19/26/22 mpg.
2022 Honda Pilot Value
We tested a fully loaded all-wheel-drive Elite which is one of the pricier models in its class. However, it offers a better quality feel and a better cabin than many rivals, so the price seems reasonable.
Materials and assembly are of high quality for non-luxury vehicles. Soft touch The plastics on the dash combine with high-gloss trim and matte-finish secondary controls to look and feel good.
The base warranty is three years/36,000 miles and the powertrain warranty is five years/60,000 miles. Those are standard for the class as is the three-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance coverage.
2022 Honda Pilot Price
This year’s stripped-down Pilot line up starts at $38,055 with optional equipment climbing to around $55,000. The Pilot EX-L has a smart combo feature and is something we would buy.
The 2022 Honda Pilot is one of the best SUVs for 2022. It’s a 3-row SUV with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It has a comfortable ride and a long list of standard and available features.
The Pilot is powered by a V6 engine that makes quick work of acceleration. All-wheel drive is available for improved traction in inclement weather. The Pilot has excellent safety scores and comes standard with many advanced driver assistance features.
