2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Review
Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the AMG GT coupe and convertible for 2022 leaving the sedan as the only offering. The sedan – which Mercedes calls a four-door coupe as you know – gets further pared-back with
The high-performance GT 63 S trim at least initially getting the axe part of the model year. If Mercedes can fix the supply chain issues that make it difficult to build the V8 found in its various AMG 63 trim vehicles it could return later in 2022.
There’s a lot to like about the 2022 AMG GT. The four-door coupe takes the aggressive styling and low-slung coupe styling of the AMG GT sports car and blends it into a sedan body. It comes in two flavours for 2022: GT 43 and GT 53. Both are great for driving Benefit from smooth power and plenty of luxury features available.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Performance
We tested the GT 53 sedan. Its engine feels strong and responsive around town, and it’s remarkably smooth. Standard all-wheel drive also means plenty of traction. On our test track the AMG GT 53 sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
That’s on par with rival six-cylinder sports sedans We’ve tested the Audi S7 and BMW 840i Gran Coupe. The automatic transmission downshifts quickly when you need it and smooth when you don’t. The GT 53’s engine start-stop system is also not conspicuous.
Unfortunately the rest of the GT 53 can’t match the power of the engine. Every car in this class is big and heavy but the GT 53 doesn’t hide its mass like the Porsche Panamera or Cadillac CT5-V Blacking. Suspension helps it flatten,
But steering is lacking We wanted the precision of a truly great sports sedan. The brakes were also off par on our emergency braking distance test despite feeling very strong in everyday driving. The large turning radius that makes tight turns difficult is another downside here.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Comfort
The AMG GT 53’s suspension is firmer than our favourite sports sedans. While comfortable on flat highways this car transmits more road imperfections into the cabin than the Audi S7 or BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. Wind and road noise were also higher than we liked. At least The exhaust note from the inline-six sounds sweet.
Our test vehicle was equipped with optional AMG Performance seats. They have thin padding and don’t offer much adjustment unless you opt for an extra adjustment package that costs extra. Heated and ventilated seats are also an option as are the rear seats. Looks like nickel and dim for us. That said the front seats are comfortable and the rear bucket cushions are nice.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Interior
The GT’s interior is shared with another four-door coupe from the Mercedes CLS and the large console between the seats appears to be pulled from the GT coupe. It’s a little intrusive but gives it a sporty cockpit feel.
The interior design is overall futuristic and visually exciting But some of its ergonomics may take some getting used to. It’s also a four-seater which can be a problem for some families. Actively bolstered sports seats are standard and comfortable while the fat flat-bottomed steering wheel aluminium trim and digital instrument cluster fit the sedan’s High-performance tasks.
Build quality is excellent and materials match AMG pricing. This is a hatchback and the GT coupe does have rear seats that fold down to increase cargo space. There’s 12.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Technology
The AMG GT 53 uses Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system which has one of the best in-car navigation systems available today. The map is clear and easy to read and there is no business cluttering other systems.
You can enter directions in a variety of ways from touchscreens to Mercedes Excellent Hey Mercedes voice command system. In general voice commands are great and can be used to adjust climate controls change radio stations or even tell you a joke.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard but neither offer wireless connectivity. A wireless charging The pads are standard but are hidden behind the cup holders. Both rows have a handful of USB-C ports.
Mercedes offers a variety of driver aids for the AMG GT 53, but most must be added as standalone options or as part of a larger package. Our car came with adaptive cruise control blind-spot monitoring lane-keep assist and more. Most of it works well despite our perseverance Traffic sign recognition problems unnecessarily slow cars down.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Storage
Mercedes may have given the AMG GT 53 a coupe-like shape, but it doesn’t suffer from coupe-like storage space. The big plus is the GT 53’s rear hatch. Its 12.7 cubic feet of cargo space is less than other coupe-like sedans but the space itself is wide and deep.
The biggest problem is a Tall rear bumper; that makes it a little far-fetched to put things in the back.
As for in-cabin storage the door pockets and centre console are about the size of the class average. We do have issues with the cup holders. They are too deep for shorter cups and can inadvertently remove the lid from a small cup of coffee. Plus using them completely blocks wireless charging Upholstered.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Fuel Economy
EPA-estimated fuel economy for the AMG GT 53 is 21 MPG (19 city/25 highway). On our 115-mile evaluation cycle it got 22.4 MPG. That’s better than its V8-powered rival but worse than most six-cylinder competition most of which cost a lot less.
Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Infotainment and Connectivity
Unfortunately AMG’s infotainment system while powerful is complex and can be frustrating to use. On the plus side its 12.3-inch screen is large and Apple CarPlay integration and wireless phone charging and navigation are standard.
Onboard Wi-Fi with Rear seat central touchscreen display. There are three USB ports in the front seat area and two more in the back.
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Value
For better or worse the GT 53 looks and feels like a Mercedes-Benz. The interior is beautiful and well-appointed with nice wood trim and soft leather on the seats. Our test vehicle came with features like forged wheels performance exhaust and AMG performance seats and driver aids Such as adaptive cruise control. However, all of this comes at a price. Both BMW Audi and Cadillac offer V8 power and better performance for less money.
Mercedes has the standard four-year/50,000-mile base powertrain and corrosion warranty average for the class. It also includes four years/50,000 miles of roadside assistance
2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Prices
Since a V-8-powered model may not be available this year we recommend the mid-range GT53 which offers plenty of horsepower and a pleasant driving experience. We’ll be adding the Warmth and Comfort Package which adds a heated steering wheel heated front armrests and quick heating Elements of the front seats.
The driver assistance package is also attractive as it adds a host of tech including adaptive cruise control lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring.
