The all-new 2022 BMW M4 is finally here, and it looks better than ever. This sports car has been completely redesigned inside and out, and it’s packed with new features and technology.
The 2022 BMW M4 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0 litter inline-six engine that produces 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with rear-wheel drive.
The BMW M4 is a high-performance sports coupe one of the fastest and most powerful models in the BMW line-up. Both the 2022 BMW M4 and the 4-Series Coupe on which it is based have been completely redesigned for 2021 with new technology and styling backed by the most powerful M4 engine ever built. 2022 BMW M4 Races are now available with all-wheel drive.
2022 BMW M4 Review
This is the first time an M3 or M4 has been offered with all-wheel drive which BMW calls xDrive. The system is rear-biased meaning it only sends power to the front wheels when the car senses that extra grip is needed. BMW says AWD shaved 0.4 seconds off the 0-60 mph time.
Like a bigger BMW m5 The sedan M4 Competition xDrive will have selectable drive modes including one that disables traction and stability control while splitting all power to the rear axle. If you prefer to keep things simple the M4 is still available in its rear-wheel-drive layout.
The M4 Competition has some direct competitors most notably the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S coupes and Audi RS 5. While Audi offers all-wheel drive Mercedes only sends power to its rear wheels. If you want something a little more practical the BMW M3 is almost identical to the M4 except for the addition of Two doors.
2022 BMW M4 Engine And Performance
The new BMW M4 is equipped with an excellent engine. There’s a decent amount of power from idle to red line and turbo lag is fairly minimal. Competing models like our test car received a slight power boost along with a few other minor upgrades.
Our test car had an automatic transmission. It shifts quickly and reacts quickly when you need to downshift during aggressive driving, but it’s also great for commuting around town. The optional carbon-ceramic brakes (also on our test car) didn’t fade even under hard driving. Our test car stops at 60 mph in 106 feet which is slightly shorter than the class average.
The standard adaptive suspension does a good job of keeping the car parked when you’re cornering, but we found the firmest setting a little too stiff on the street. Our main complaint is the steering. While it’s an improvement over the last M4 it lacks the level of feedback and precision you’ll find elsewhere.
2022 BMW M4 Fuel Economy and MPG
The 2022 M4 is rated at 16 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. We haven’t had a chance to test the M4 on the 75-mph fuel-economy route yet, but we’ll update this story with the results when we do. For more information on M4 fuel economy visit the EPA website.
2022 BMW M4 Interior
While the M4 has the same interior layout and passenger space as the regular 4-Series it has a variety of unique materials and some racing-inspired options. Its thick-rimmed steering wheel features a pair of red buttons that can be used to customize the M drive modes.
The cabin can also be enhanced with freedom Lots of carbon fibre trim and lengthy paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. The standard M sports seats are significantly bolstered with illuminated emblems and integrated head restraints and can be equipped with ventilation for the first time on the M4.
Optional carbon fibre front panel Not only do the seats look super cool they are lighter than standard seats and can be lowered more. While the back seat is clearly not as roomy as the M3 sedan thankfully the space isn’t a torture chamber with an inch more legroom than its predecessor. Choose Convertible body style unlocks unlimited headroom; simply lower the retractable fabric top.
2022 BMW M4 Comfort
As with any performance car comfort is a relative term. The M4 Competition’s ride is firm but better tuned and more compliant than some of BMW’s other M Competition models. The standard adaptive suspension absorbs shocks well in most situations without rattling your teeth.
Its hardest setting is too much for public roads, but it’s easy to dial back. The performance car has low noise and vibration. It’s not whisper quiet but the M4 is more refined than its exhaust might suggest.
Our test vehicle had optional carbon fibre, or bucket front seats. These comfortable lightweight seat pads are thin and have a small bump on the bottom of the seat to fit the driver’s legs. BMW’s designers may have added it to enhance lateral support when cornering, or maybe it’s because they Just thought it looked cool. But our short driver (less than 6 feet tall) found it a hassle. Consider sticking with standard M4 seats.
2022 BMW M4 infotainment and connectivity
Every M4 comes with a nice looking infotainment system featuring a large 12.3-inch touchscreen. It has a myriad of control options allowing users to adjust settings and navigate menus via voice command buttons on the steering wheel and a large central rotary controller and buttons for comfort.
The M4’s system comes standard with Apple CarPlay Android Auto and a Harman/Kardon audio system. Those who want more advanced features can choose from popular options such as gesture controls subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspots and wireless charging pads.
2022 BMW M4 Technology
The M4 is equipped with the latest in-car technology that BMW has to offer. The standard navigation system is one of the better on the market although its constantly updating traffic flow is annoying. If you prefer to run from your phone
The M4 offers Apple CarPlay (with wireless) and Android Auto integration. The M4 also has USB-A and USB-C ports for charging and phone connectivity. You can also use a nice list of voice commands to do things like change the radio or enter an address in the navigation system.
The M4 comes with standard and optional driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors. Overall BMW has done a good job of tuning these features without being overly sensitive.
2022 BMW M4 Storage
The M4 offers an impressive amount of storage. The bootcentre is quite spacious with wide and high openings. The rear seats fold down to further open up the space. Its interior is arguably more impressive with large pockets and a large centre console bin. Even rear passenger’s Small storage box.
Have children and need a child safety seat? That back seat should provide a reasonable amount of space, although the long doors can make getting in and out a little painful for kids. Seat anchors are easy to find and attach.
2022 BMW M4 Value
This is a real sticky spot. The BMW M4 Competition is priced on par with direct competitors like the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S coupes and Audi RS 5. But our car has additional options over $25,000.
That’s a lot of dough, and it still doesn’t have an upgraded audio system or adaptive cruise control. The value drops further when you consider performance cars like the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray or the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
BMW includes a four-year/50,000-mile base and powertrain warranty which is average for this class. You do get excellent four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance and three years/36,000 miles of service access.

This example checks almost every box in the configurator and as tested came to $104,295. Oops! I Wish BMW would offer a cheaper M4 convertible with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission, but I see why not. Performance drop tops may be the only category in which sales in the US are declining faster than sedans.
