The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is a visually interesting family sedan at a great value. Modern mid-size flavours cars come in many flavours, from well-equipped entry-level trims to three frugal hybrids to performance models with squeaky tires.

Instead, the sedan impresses with a host of standard driver-assistance systems and an upscale interior filled with popular tech features.
Its comfortable seats and Its sturdy ride is offset by roomy accommodation – most notably in the N Line performance model. While the 2022 Sonata isn’t as satisfying to drive as the Honda Accord, it’s still one of the top picks in its class and one of our Editors’ Choices.

The Sonata isn’t the sharpest handling in its class – we prefer the Accord and Nissan Altima, but it’s still poised and responsive on the road. The ride is more erratic than we’d like and firmer than most cars in this category, but the Sonata is at least Its turbocharged 1.6 litter engine is fairly quick.
When we tested the Sonata with that powertrain, it hit 60 mph in 7.3 seconds—an acceptable result for this class. Shifts from the eight-speed automatic transmission are smooth and well-timed. The Sonata gives a sophisticated look, but its interior comfort falls short of expectations. The seats are firm and lack the soft comfort and adjustment range of the segment leaders. The Sonata’s interior is attractive, and it feels like more value than the sedan’s sticker price. The rear seats are comfortable and spacious, the materials look premium, and the dashboard layout is simple and ergonomic.
The Sonata’s 16 cubic feet of cargo space is regarding what we expect from a midsized sedan — neither the best nor the worst. We still have seven carry-on suitcases in its boot, which has plenty of room for a long trip with the family.

The Sonata’s centre console is deceptively capable. It just looks like an open flat area, but there are some neat touches like a textured surface and a divider between the cupholders for a spare phone.
Front passengers also have access to a small but nice storage area to the right of the tunnel. When it comes to car seats, the lower car seat anchors are squeezed between the seat bottom and sat back, so you have to dig a little to get to them.
