The all-new Hyundai Elantra has been completely redesigned and re-engineered for the 2022 model year. The seventh-generation Elantra features an all-new platform, new engines and a host of other updates inside and out. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2022 Hyundai Elantra.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra compact four-door casts a long styling shadow over rivals like the Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3. It’s rough on the outside and unbaked on the inside, but there are a variety of powertrain options, including an interesting hybrid with excellent EPA ratings and an N-type that takes it from Just a commuter car.
Performance gets a goodbye in the base and hybrid versions, but the 2022 Elantra gets top marks for warranty and features — and safety a close second. We give it a TCC rating of 6.8 out of 10. The Elantra N would have a higher rating if scored separately. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new in the 2022 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a holdover from the high-output Elantra N that shares the mechanics with the Veloster N. The basic shape continues its wicked origami look: it’s a diamond-encrusted split fold then split again to good effect. It’s all tied together in an anachronistic way – but inside, The drab decor and the mysterious wall between the passengers let it down.
The base car has a 147-horsepower inline-4 and CVT for mid-range power and good fuel economy; the Elantra has good steering and ride quality that doesn’t go away when the high-economy hybrid system slips under the hood.
Spice level rises to at least two peppers, The 201 hp turbo-4 in the Elantra N line-up and the 276 hp Elantra N throw in more capsaicin for a mix of ready acceleration and confident grip.
The Elantra could almost be a midsize sedan now, but its low roofline cuts into headroom. We weren’t too happy with the seats, that needed more padding and shape for long-distance crowds; the Elantra’s plastic cabin also fell short of the standards set by the Honda and Mazda.
All Elantras have automatic emergency braking and both the IIHS and NHTSA give it top marks, though its Best Safety Pick award only goes to limited-edition cars with fancy headlights.

Hyundai’s last three Elantras went from hissing to snoozing. It’s a feast for the retina, with its jet-fighter stance and wrinkled body panels. For the dazzling new shape, we give it a 7 here, two points above average.
The Elantra’s body has the sculpted and chamfered appearance of the styling model before being smoothed for mass consumption. All the diamond pleats around the waist are technically difficult to make. Its sloping wasp waist fades into a fastback roofline Secure it to the rear end with a pin tail light. That’s enough to be the envy of Honda’s recent Civic.
The cockpit is enough to send it back for rework. The steering wheel even looks like it’s sighing at the waves of black plastic that wrap around its controls. The more drab, less edgy
Elantra houses the front seats in separate compartments separated by a divider, with no visible dividers in reason. Many of the frugal trims flank a large touchscreen, and the dash is covered by thin air vents.
2022 Hyundai Elantra Performance
We prefer the better offline performance of the Elantra Hybrid. It pairs an electric motor and a 1.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with 1.6 litter inline-4 and 6-speed dual-clutch transmissions for a net output of 139 horsepower.
The more frugal Elantra is better: battery boost It’s more responsive at traffic light start and its transmission clips through real gears and feels more natural than a CVT. Combined, they also achieve an excellent EPA rating of up to 54 mpg.
The hybrid also features a more sophisticated rear multi-link suspension for greater stability while driving. It’s planted, and it shows in the way it turns. The powertrain can be choppy when the gas engine clutches in and out, but that’s a small trade-off for soaring fuel economy Ratings.
The Hyundai Elantra Speed
The base car and hybrid Elantra are not fast. In base spec, the Elantra’s 147-horsepower 2.0 liter inline-4 does its best to reduce fuel consumption while delivering power to the front wheels. It’s hardworking, but there’s not a lot of enthusiasm here.
The powered CVT attempts to shift gears such as Those are on a typical automatic, but even when it’s dialed into Sport mode it lags, and it responds slowly even with the gas pedal down. Passing the highway requires some calculations.
On the plus side, the Elantra is fun to drive. This Elantra handles noticeably better than the previous version, with some wandering on the freeway undercutting the crisp steering feel. Its front struts and rear torsion beam suspension are not made of exotic materials, but it is damped Perfect for that low-key ride its brake pedal tuning adds a dutiful air.
2022 Hyundai Elantra: Interior comfort and quality
The Elantra’s interior is comparable to Hyundai’s own midsize Sonata. Our 6-foot-tall crew can comfortably sit in its low-lying front seat, which still provides good headroom, although it’s about an inch off the ground than before.
The printed fabric and thin padding on the low-spec Elantra strikes us as too frugal. The previous-generation Elantra had more support and softer padding—they didn’t have the lumbar support as well-defined as the 2022 version.
With about 38 inches of rear legroom, the Elantra does a good job of accommodating long-legged passengers, but headroom suffers due to the low and sloping roof. With the rear setbacks folded down, the Elantra expands to 14.2 cubic feet of boot space.
The seats aren’t the only quality issue with this Elantra. Hard black plastics rise higher on the doors and dash, and a sense of low-cost execution permeates the cabin. The touchscreen and glossy plastic on the handle can open a dozen FBI coolers with fingerprints they’ve captured. Back, The seat has no vents or USB ports. Call it a small setback.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Prices
The Elantra SE will cost at least $20,875, but we’ll spend a whopping $22,125 on the Elantra SEL to access features like a digital meter and wireless smartphone charging.
The $29,275 Limited Hybrid gets these features as standard and adds leather upholstery and adaptive cruise control. Bring one starting at $32,925 the Elantra N with a 6-speed manual transmission may seem too expensive for an Elantra, but it’s well worth it.
The $26,625 Elantra Limited and $29,275 Limited Hybrid come with these add-ons along with leather upholstery a 10.3-inch touchscreen non-wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and adaptive cruise control.
Its options range from Bose audio to 17-inch wheels a power driver’s seat a sunroof and Android Smartphone-based key to unlock and start the car without a physical key.
Performance lovers, the sporty Elantra N Line is just $25,275.

The Hyundai Elantra is a compact car that has been produced since 1990. It is currently in its seventh generation. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model (later rebadged as the Verada) already being on sale there.
The first-generation models were substantially different from other markets, instead being a hatchback version of the Stellar. However, since the 1997 model year all generations have been based on the same platform and are thus very similar to one another.
The seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra was unveiled in 2020. It is available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine or a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, while the diesel engine is only available with the latter.
