As Kia’s smallest SUV, the 2022 Niro delivers practicality and value in a small package. But the Niro is unique in its segment because of its hybrid powertrain. Competitors like the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona don’t offer such an option.
The entry-level powertrain is a 1.6-liter A four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor produces 139 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid version is also available, which can travel 26 miles on electric power before using the gasoline engine.

A 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor are paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission in the regular Niro. During our testing, the system produced a total of 139 horsepower and propelled the Niro to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds competition.
The fully loaded EX Premium trim we tested, dragged down by all the extras, took 9.5 seconds to complete the same task.
The plug-in hybrid version uses the same basic powertrain as the standard model, but comes with a larger battery pack for increased EV range. That, According to the EPA, the battery can run the EV for up to 26 miles. The Niro handles rough roads with ease, providing a controlled, stable ride.
However, we noticed unusually high crash noise entering the cabin when driving over bumpy roads. The Niro’s steering is responsive and precise. We also appreciate the available multipurpose steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, which can be used to shift gears or cycle between four levels of regenerative braking depending on the driving mode selected.
2022 Kia Niro Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The most frugal Niro Hybrid is rated at 53 mpg in the city, 48 mpg on the highway and 50 mpg combined. The last version we tested returned 46 mpg highway on the 75 mph fuel economy test.

2022 Kia Niro Interior
The interior of the base LX is clean and heavy with plastic and cloth. Starting with the mid-level Touring trim, leather appointments make their way into the mix, but even the top-of-the-line Niro gets a synthetic interior.
Standard across the lineup is two-zone automatic climate control that controls the driver and front passenger. There’s even a button to turn off the passenger’s climate control if the seat is empty, which can save energy on hot summer days when hybrids have traditionally lost efficiency due to increased air conditioning loads.
2022 Kia Niro Comfort, and Cargo
Niro’s design Hybrid from the start, not retrofitted from an existing gasoline-powered car. As such, its battery pack doesn’t reduce cargo space. Unfortunately, the rear seats don’t create a flat cargo floor when folded, and other similarly-sized crossovers can hold more cargo.
We try to Six suitcases fit behind the rear seats and 18 suitcases when the rear seats are folded.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The standard infotainment system is an 8.0-inch touchscreen, but a larger 10.3-inch unit is installed on higher trim levels. Both are complemented by hard buttons containing physical volume and tuning knobs. These systems are intuitive and simple, and Kia offers Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.
Aside from smartphone connectivity and SiriusXM compatibility, the Base Niros receives hardly any infotainment gadgets. The optional navigation system uses GPS data to predict energy needs, which for example will save energy in the battery for emergencies. Climb mountains.
