The new 2022 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that has been completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. It is now based on the same platform as the Ford Bronco and has a similar design. The new Expedition is available in three trim levels: XLT Limited and Platinum.
It is powered by a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that makes 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.

The 2022 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max are the company’s largest and most versatile family haulers. While they’re not as easy to get in and out of as a minivan Ford’s largest SUV comes with three rows of seats has a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 pounds and is capable of driving off-road.

While these attributes apply to others in the large SUV segment, the Expeditions have the smoothest ride and one of the most spacious cabins. Unfortunately, the Ford’s entry is not as well driven as more potent competitors like the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Suburban. Every 2022 The Expedition has a brave twin-turbo V-6, but it’s not very fuel efficient, especially on the highway.
Its combination of style and tech features such as the available 15.5-inch touchscreen and hands-free driving mode make the Expedition an interesting option.
What’s New for 2022?
For 2022 Ford is giving the Expedition lineup revised exterior and interior styling as well as new features and options. In addition to the obvious changes to the front end, the cabin also inherits an all-new dashboard design similar to the one found inside the recently redesigned Ford F-150 pickup truck.
This thanks to better materials the Expedition’s interior quality has been improved, and its infotainment system has been completely overhauled with a new standard 12.0-inch touchscreen or a larger optional portrait-oriented 15.5-inch touchscreen. Additionally, Ford now offers its Blue Cruise hands-free highway driving Technology at the top Platinum trim level.
The new Timberline model has a decidedly rugged look, complemented by 33-inch all-terrain tires and an increased ride height. New Stealth Performance package available on Limited Edition trim with a more sinister look and sporty tuning Suspension and a more powerful version of the twin-turbo V-6.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
We think the mid-range Limited trim level of the regular-wheelbase Expedition is available. Not only is it a perfect blend of standard features (leather-trimmed seats Bang & Olufsen stereo and electric pedals), but it’s also packed with enticing performance option that should make larger rigs drive better.
Opting for Stealth Performance brings a sportier suspension set up a more powerful engine (440 hp versus 375 hp) and unique dark exterior details including 22-inch wheels. Four-Wheel Drive – for those who need it is — about $3000 extra.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Motivating the Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission paired with rear- or four-wheel drive. The standard engine makes 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, but on limited models the output can be boosted to 400 hp and 480 hp pound-feet.
Higher-output versions are available on Timberline trim and limited, with the Stealth Performance package boosting those numbers to 440 horses and 510 pound-feet. While we have not sampled any of these engines, we have previously tested with 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. All Expeditions feature independent rear suspension.
While passengers are comfortable with its soft ride, the driver is punished for the awkward handling and imprecise steering feel. The Expedition can tow up to 9300 lbs while the Expedition Max has a longer rating capped at £9000.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Such heavy haulers certainly don’t help conserve fossil fuels. Ford claims its Eco Boost engine (twin-turbo V-6) is more efficient than a V-8, but the Expedition doesn’t live up to that promise. Rear drive is rated at 17 MPG city and 23 MPG highway;

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Expedition’s cabin materials and trim get more refined from model to model, excelling on the Platinum trim with rich leather upholstery and massaging front seats. Both the regular Expedition and the long-wheelbase Expedition Max have a spacious interior, unlike most models Competitors – Its third row doesn’t torment adults.

Three-seat benches are standard in the second row, but you can specify a pair of captain’s chairs if you prefer. The Max offers unparalleled interior cubby storage. Each model has a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or the back seat.
Both the second and third rows fold completely to a flat floor for easier loading.

Infotainment and Connectivity
The Expedition comes standard with a massive 12.0-inch touchscreen that runs Ford’s Sync4 infotainment software. In addition to being able to receive over-the-air updates, it also has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and rear seat entertainment system.
If the standard touchscreen isn’t big enough, the Expedition can also be equipped with a vertically oriented 15.5-inch unit that’s also found inside the battery-electric Mustang Mach-E.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
In addition to a variety of standard and optional driver assistance technologies, the Expedition offers two very advanced devices.
Top Platinum models come with Ford’s hands-free driving feature called Blue Cruise. Off-road-oriented Timberline trim features Trail Steering Assist, which provides the SUV with a tighter turning radius by braking the inside rear wheel in sharp low-speed turns when the vehicle is in 4WD mode and on soft surfaces.
