Although the nameplate was originally used on the less-than-stellar compact car line of the 1970s, Ford has reinstated the Maverick name for its new small pickup truck and incorporated it into the lineup under the midsize Ranger. Instead of sharing parts and mechanics with the Ranger, the Maverick rides on the same chassis as the Bronco Sport compact crossover. Ford offers the Maverick three trims—XL XLT and Lariat—and the XL is the best option for keeping the price as low as possible. It lacks the basic comforts that most buyers consider essentials, but it’s great as a work truck.

Maverick 2022 Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Rather than starting with the Bronco Sport’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine as the standard powertrain, Ford has mixed it with the Maverick’s base powertrain. All trims come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine assisted by an electric motor for a total of 191 horsepower.

Buyers can also opt for a non-hybrid powertrain, which can be swapped for a beefy 250-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is optional for that powertrain. The hybrid system was less snappy in our testing, taking 7.7 seconds to hit 60 mph, but it still gets the job done. To provide impressive payload capacity, The Maverick’s suspension is fairly stiff, resulting in a bit of a bumpy ride over broken pavement. We’ll update this story with the results once we have a chance to test the Maverick on our test track.
Towing and Payload Capacity
Even with the base hybrid system, the Maverick offers 1500 pounds of payload capacity and 2000 pounds of towing capacity. With the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional towing package, the Maverick can tow up to 4000 pounds. Want to haul more with a small pickup? Santa Cruz is rated to tow up to 5000 lbs.
Ford maverick Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
EPA estimates the hybrid variant of the Maverick at 42 MPG city and 33 MPG highway; the non-hybrid is rated at 23 MPG city and 30 MPG highway and 22 MPG city and 29 MPG all-wheel drive in the highway.

Ford maverick Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
All Mavericks are crew cabs, which means four full-size doors and a fairly roomy rear seat. Ford has installed a number of lockers and storage compartments throughout the cabin, including some large areas under the rear seats. The base model is far from luxurious, but does offer standard details such as tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls remote keyless entry and adjustable lumbar support for the front seats.
Additional features are available as standard or as part of an option package on XLT and Lariat trims, including dual-zone automatic climate control ambient interior lighting and Power front seats. Ford says the Maverick’s 4.5-foot bed can hold up to 18 sheets of 4×8-foot three-quarter-inch plywood without tilt loading. The bed also comes with a 12 volt outlet and a 110 volt outlet available as options.
Infotainment and Connectivity
An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard on all Maverick trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard features, and even the base model comes with an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. Options include SiriusXM satellite radio upgraded B&O Play stereo and wireless smartphone charging capability.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Maverick offers a variety of driver-assistance features, but many of the most sought-after items will require optional packages or springs for more expensive trims.
