The 2023 Toyota Highlander is a popular SUV that has been on the market since 2001. The third generation of the Highlander was introduced for the 2014 model year and was updated for the 2019 model year. The fourth generation of the Highlander will be introduced for the 2023 model year.
Toyota Highlander Overview
The Highlander has plenty to choose from, but with more than two dozen vehicles in the competitive midsize SUV segment it’s just one midsize player. There are eleven decorations to choose from. Hybrid or non-hybrid systems are available, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional.
All trims offer excellent handling and a smooth ride, but the Highlander’s driving demeanor may need a little caffeine. Even on the base L the interior is equipped with beautiful modern conveniences, an easy-to-use infotainment system and a host of standard driver-assistance features.
Limited and The platinum model makes a good impression on Lexus with a nice leather interior, a premium JBL stereo and other tech features. While rivals like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade offer more luxury and third-row space, the Mazda CX-9 offers a better interior and better driving dynamics and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L bring the brand’s off-road capabilities.
By contrast, the Highlander while fully competent isn’t a compelling choice.
What’s New for 2023 Toyota Highlander?
The Highlander’s standard V-6 has been replaced by a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder for 2023. The new engine makes 265 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque; Toyota says the combined fuel-economy rating of 24 MPG is the same as the outgoing V-6 which makes us wonder why the switch Fewer cylinders were made.
A new 12.3-inch infotainment display is available, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now available in Limited and Platinum editions. These higher-end models also get power-folding exterior mirrors, while XLE and XSE trims add a hands-free power tailgate.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
In our opinion, the midrange XLE is the best option. It features details like heated front seats, a wireless smartphone charging pad and a power sunroof. We’d also like to buy the Premium Audio with Dynamic Navigation package, which brings in-dash navigation and an upgraded stereo system.
Toyota Highlander Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Highlander comes standard with a 265-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. We haven’t driven this version yet, but when we do, we’ll be able to comment on its performance.
2.5-liter four-cylinder Combined with the two electric motors, it provides a combined 243 horsepower in the Highlander Hybrid. The model is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with a choice of front- and all-wheel drive.
Leveraging Toyota’s hybrid expertise,track, this powertrain has something to offer buyers More fuel-efficient than the standard model without giving up much in terms of performance; on our test track, the last hybrid we tested hit 60 mph in 7.3 seconds.
Handling is bland but stable, perfect for family driver duties. Potential Buyers in this segment will likely know that the Ford Explorer also comes in hybrid form. But pit these uses against each other, and Toyota comes out on top when it comes to fuel economy.
Fuel Economy Toyota Highlander
Toyota has only said 24 MPG combined for the new turbocharged engine so far, so we don’t know what its city and highway ratings will be. There’s no question that the hybrid will be rated higher than the gasoline-only model with front-wheel drive, getting 36 MPG in the city and 35 MPG in the city. MPG on the highway.

Toyota Highlander Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Base L and mid-range LE models can accommodate eight passengers using bench seats in the second and third rows, but a seven-seat arrangement with second-row captain’s seats is available on higher trims. Materials throughout the cabin are vastly improved over those of the previous-generation Highlander. Upscale Limited and Platinum models offer the most creature comforts but are less than the features offered by the Palisade Or telluride they fall short. The cargo area behind the third row holds only four carry-on suitcases; the Traverse fits six people.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Most trims come standard with an 8.0-inch infotainment system, but the Highlander Limited and Platinum get a 12.3-inch display and a 12.3-inch secondary screen as the instrument cluster. Mid-range XLE and XSE get the option of a larger 12.3-inch infotainment display, but stick with it Analog gauges from lower-end models.
An 11-speaker JBL audio system is available. Toyota offers SiriusXM satellite radio 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay Android Auto and Amazon Alexa integration on all models. A wireless smartphone charging pad is optional and integrated in the Dashboard below the infotainment display.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
In the same way Toyota does, the Highlander offers a standard suite of driver-assistance features. The package includes adaptive cruise control lane-keep assist with automatic emergency braking headlights with pedestrian detection and automatic high beams.
